ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is a reaction to the global crisis of plastic pollution. I use cast-off, surplus, and waste materials. The palette is the color story of the consumer culture, deceptively bright and cheery. These materials are by-products of the modern age, physically and conceptually. One-time use and disposability are very recent innovations. What we throw away doesn’t go away, and will haunt us for who knows how long.
BIO:
Julie Kornblum’s love of fiber arts is rooted in her earliest memories of her mother sewing and her grandmother knitting and crocheting. Julie combines ancient fiber arts with the refuse of our post-industrial world. She knits, crochets, and makes baskets from our throw-aways, and disposable and discarded plastic objects. Over the past 20 years, Julie has exhibited widely, has been published in books and magazines, has curated art exhibitions, and has coordinated large public yarnbombing projects.
