Kathryn Shearer

Kate is an Australian photographer and installation artist based in Joshua Tree, CA. Her personal work explores the complexities of the human experience in the modern world, examining themes of naturalism, consumerism, the female emotional and physical experience and personal autonomy.

Her process involves an organic interplay between the subject's physical body and often harsh, outdoor landscapes, as well as the emotional journey of the subject as they navigate their environment. The resulting work reflects this dynamic, unpredictable interplay, and serves to reveal themes of humans' relationship to the natural world - how far we have come from our primal state, and how we continue to evolve and further alienate ourselves from Mother Earth.

Kate completed the Mudhouse Artist Residency last summer and her work has appeared in shows in Los Angeles, Sydney, Crete, Torrance and Joshua Tree.

MOTHER

Artist Statement

My work centers around the female experience in the modern world. The pieces I've submitted for this exhibition focus on the yearning to be a Mother and the feelings associated with the opportunity for Motherhood being taken away, in one form or another. Lack of awareness and conversation about womens fertility, corporate work culture, relationships unexpectedly ending, lack of affordable medical care, have all influenced my personal journey around motherhood, or the lack of it.
