ARTIST STATEMENT

These sculptures were born out of an Earth Day challenge to create a work entirely out of recycled and/or biodegradable materials within the larger scope of examining the relationship between artists and the environment. This exploratory exercise unexpectedly turned into a series as I became enthralled with the process of beachcombing for coral tubes - each unique and like an unearthed treasure – and intuiting their assemblage as if a puzzle of form and texture. While the successive sculptures incorporate acrylic paint and armatures made from new rather than reused wire, they are still constructed almost entirely from repurposed or recyclable elements. Simultaneously inspired by the microscopic organisms found in ocean water responsible for recycling nutrients for the marine microbiome, each sculpture is a biomorphic abstraction reflecting the same symbiotic relationship between art and ecology if only sustainability is incorporated into the ethos of one’s practice.
