My connection to the ocean theme deepens through a poignant encounter years ago when I rescued a seagull entangled in nylon floss on the beach. The bird, wrapped as though in a puzzle, allowed me to gently untangle it. I was very impressed by her patience. This experience ignited my awareness of ghost nets and abandoned mesh nets, compelling me to collect ropes, nets, and strands found along the shore whenever I visit beaches. My submission incorporates these forged materials alongside used packing material, creating sculptural wall objects from painted, folded canvases in an origami style, adding depth and life. Using solely one color — Payne’s Gray, I explore the depth and nuance of this color across a spectrum of shades influenced by time and layering. This singular color choice underscores the thematic essence of ocean preservation—the ocean's depth, mystery, and enduring presence mirrored in the gradation of tones.
Sok'iann, born in 1981 in Taipei, Taiwan, now lives and works in the Bay Area. Her creative process frequently involves exploring geometrical creases and abstract ink washes on sculpturally unfolded canvases, crafting a silently intense, poetical universe. Her unique technique transforms her paintings into increasingly sculptural forms that push beyond the traditional canvas boundaries. In her latest series, Sok’iann integrates materials she has gathered from the seashore—such as discarded ropes, nets, and strands—along with commonly used packing materials. This incorporation of repurposed elements reflects her engagement with environmental issues, particularly ocean preservation.
